The regulations concerning the transport of dangerous goods, including radioactive material, are developed by national, international and Governmental bodies.

 

  • The UN Committee of Experts develops recommended procedures for the transport of all types of dangerous goods. These Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, applicable to all modes of transport, are published in the “Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Model Regulations”. The regulations which are applicable since 2021 are based on the 21st revised edition of the Model Regulations.   • The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) develops recommended procedures for the safe transport of radioactive materials. These procedures are published in the Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (IAEA SSR-6). The IAEA SSR-6 have also been incorporated in the United Nations Recommendations on the transport of Dangerous Goods.   • The ADR -Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road- is consistent with the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. ADR is an Agreement between States. The contracting parties include all European countires but also countries such as Morocco and the Russian Federation. The transport of dangerous goods by road, rail and inland waterways falls under one European Directive 2008/68EC and makes the regulations also applicable in the member states.   • The International Maritime Organization has developed the IMDG Code. This code is legally treated as a mandatory instrument under Chapter VII of the SOLAS convention (Safety Of Life At Sea).More information can be found on the IMO website: http://www.imo.org
  • The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has used these recommendations as the basis for developing the regulations for the safe transport of dangerous goods by any aircraft. The ICAO regulations are codified in Annex 18 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation and in its “Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air”.
